This book WAS released in chapter form during March and April, 2005.
The Lost Generation (b1883-1900) produced the greatest writers in American history. Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, T.S. Elliot, E.E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thornton Wilder, Thomas Wolfe, and Gertrude Stein. Many of these writers gathered at 12, rue de l’Odeon, Paris: Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company bookshop to write, talk, borrow books, give readings, and just socialize. What intrigued me about this incredible pool of talent was how some of them released their books. They did it in chapter form. In their honor, I released Nano the same way.
This section was created for updating my readers during the process of writing Nano. Now, you can follow the process of how I put the book together and get in on a few secrets.

One of the things I've enjoyed doing with all of my work, be it research, excel workbooks, generational theory, short writing, etc., is to put the work out while it's still being written. An example would be, putting out an excel work book with generational theory as content and have half the work done. I'd just update the workbook as time allowed. That way, people could get their hands on the work as I did it. Why wait? The same holds true for much of this web site. It's always a work in progress. However, I've never done this with a book. Until now.
Nano is not finished. I was very intrigued by the writers of the '20s, as I mentioned above, and how they released books in chapter form. Those books were not finished. They wrote chapters, published them and promised more. In particular, I was enamored with James Joyce's masterpiece, Ulysses . Not that I'm comparing my book to his. Joyce's work was a literary work that will live-on for hundred's of years. My book is just a plain ole historical mystery thriller.
But, like I said, Nano isn't done. Yikes. Oh...it's done in my head. I know the ending. I know how I'll get there, also. But, it's not all on paper yet. How much is on paper? 19 chapters. Nano has always been planned as a 27 chapter book consisting of 3 acts. Chapters 1-9 are act I, chapters 10-18 are act II, and 19-27 are act III.
So, I'm still putting act III, on paper. Furthermore, I'm still going back and editing the first part of the book as I write the last part of the book. Inevitably, I run into mistakes. Today, I found one. It seems the address I was using for Hunter's house is wrong. (See Frank Lloyd Wright section)
The outline is complete as is the storyboard. I will post both of those as soon as the last chapter is written. They are both interesting because I've never written a novel and I needed to come up with some way to track the storylines. The outline and storyboard are the best way to accomplish that task, as far as I know. The storyboard is in excel form. Excel is amazing. I use it to trade the markets and write! How cool is that?
The outline is in MS Word. I've taken advantage of Words ability to build in a table of contents. That allowed me to use several levels of headers to help me keep track of what scene was picking up a prior scene and what scene had a hanging storyline that needed to be picked up in a later chapter. The table of content became a quick visual to see the whole story in a few pages.
The excel sheet was a way to see how the storylines arced throughout the whole book and how quickly I was picking up storylines. It also allowed me to visualize the storylines to make sure I wasn't paying too much attention to a sub-plot and concentrating on the main storylines. It's very easy to get sidetracked. Excel also helped me keep track of how often I was using certain subjects and if I was ignoring others. For example, I wanted to include several subjects in Nano, like, quantum mechanics, physics, cryptography, Nano tech, and a few others, but needed to keep track of when they were being written into a storyline. Excel helped with that task and the rest. I'll post it when I'm done.

The storyboard is really a hodge-podge of files that I merged into one big excel sheet as time went on. You'll see the tabs labeled within the spreadsheet to help identify what aspect I was trying to keep track of. The actual storyboard is on the tab called 'arc scenes'. It's a story arc in pictures.
Hunter lives at 428 Forest Ave., in Oak Park, Illinois. The address and the house exist in the real world, as many other things do also, in the book. However, I had him living in the wrong...Wright house. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
Oak Park is known for its Frank Lloyd Wright homes as you will read about, in later chapters. The actual house I wanted Hunter to live in is a house I dearly love and have always loved. I grew up in Oak Park. My wife and I had our marriage ceremony in Unity temple, which is a Wright building, in Oak Par. I know his Oak Park homes well. In fact, I almost put a bid in on the house Hunter lives in, in 1986. So, I know the property. At least I thought I did. I had the wrong address. In the early chapters of Nano, I was using the address of Wright's home and studio. This would be the home he lived in, in Oak Park. It actually has two addresses and this is where the confusion enters the story. Here's a picture of 428 Forest Ave. This is FLW's home. Or, the home side of his home/studio.

It was built in 1895 and remodeled in 1923. It's located at 333 Forest Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois.

Write what you know (what's real, what's not, in Nano? [I])

Write what you know. That's the supreme law of writing. You either lived the experience you are writing about or you read about the experience. I did both with Nano.
Hunter is a trader and made all of his money (his millions) trading at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). That would be an experience that I lived. Well, almost. I didn't make the millions that Hunter made, but I did pretty good for a pimpled-face 17 year old walking into the CBOT and getting a runners job. My first book, From the Pits to the Pits, is about that experience.
It never crossed my mind to have the protagonist be anything else but a trader. It's what I know and it seemed simple enough to just make him a trader. I state this fact because I really didn't understand the concept of write what you know until late in my life. I came across a simple explanation, like the one above, and it triggered an understanding for me. Hopefully I can pass that along.
Another example of this concept is Dan and Brian. They are the two characters in the story that are considered back-seat drivers. Said differently, they are the C3PO and R2D2 of the story. These types of characters are essential in a story. You can have two or just one. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you write-in a character that supports the protagonist. The same can be said for the antagonist. So...what does this have to do with write what you know? I based both characters on two very good friends of mine.
In Nano, the back-story for Dan and Brian is factual. We did go to those schools together. Dan and I did move away from Brian and go to a different grade school together, then high school. Furthermore, I did meet up with Brian, in 1986, and rekindle our friendship. They are both musicians. They play all the instruments listed in the book, and they are both extremely funny and quick witted. Especially Dan and I'll prove it.
I've been emailing Dan the last few days. We've been going back and forth about Nano. We were also making jokes and referring to the TV show, Seinfeld. Here's Dan's last email.

See. I told ya. The guy is frickin' hilarious. So...write what you know.
What else is true in Nano? I love historical fiction. It's always been my favorite kind of book. Devil in the White City, by Eric Larson, books by Caleb Carr, and Dan Brown are a few examples. I don't think I purposely set out to write Nano as a historical fiction book, it manifested into this genre. I have a formula that I came up with to decide what I want to write about. It's to complicated to explain in a few sentences, but I do have a web page written on how to do it. I'll put it up soon. The formula speaks to subjects and characters and writing what you know. If fact, that's the name of the web page, Write What You Know. I came up with the idea when I was asked to lead a class, at a community college, on writing.
There's plenty of events that actually happened in Nano. I'll post information about them as time allows. In the first few chapters there's a good example. If I remember correctly, chapter 5 is the back-story of the Ackart family. Charles begins the storyline by telling Stan how his great-great-great grandfather lost the family fortune. I created a world that goes back to 1787, to help build the Ackart family story, and use real events as the back drop. Most of the historical events listed in that chapter happened. Except, of course, the Ackart family. That would be 100% fiction.
I also used generational theory to create the Ackart family. John Vallis Ackart, was Estes Father. He was born in 1799, which makes him a member of the Transcendental generation. He was a Writer by trade. That generation is the same archetype as the Baby Boomers; Prophet-Idealist. The Transcendental generation did a heck of a lot more damage to college campuses than the Boomers. The 1830s saw the worst campus rioting in US history. It also produced some extraordinary writers, as you read, in chapter 5. I purposely made Estes from the Gilded generation. That generation is the same archetype as GenX. They both share the same traits. You'd be amazed at the similarities, but, that can be read on my generations page. I don't want to babble on too much.

If you enjoy historical fiction, you'll enjoy what happened to the Ackart fortune and how Estes lost it. He's going to lose it in and actual economic event that took place, in 1873. That's coming up in the book soon.
I love history and economics, so, historical economics was a no-brainer. I have gobs of research on all the economic crashes since the beginning of this country. I think it's important to intertwine unfortunate events into stories for entertainment and to let people know that it happened. Because, as a country we don't seem to learn from our mistakes.

Q: What are the asterisks I see in the book?
A: In the book you'll see asterisks between 'scenes' within a chapter. Furthermore, you'll see some of the asterisks actually misplaced. Suddenly, while reading a chapter, * * * appears in between paragraphs. You'll ask yourself the question, 'Why did he put these here?' Some of the asterisks are there for the reader to show a definitive change in the scenes. And, some are there for me.
All the chapters are divided up into scenes, but, I don't separate all the scene changes with asterisks. If I did, it would interrupt the flow of the story. However, when a new character shows up in scene I spate it into a new scene, in the master draft. That way I can keep track of when characters interact with each other. Moreover, it aids in the story lines. Every time two characters talk there's a storyline taking place.
Example: if Charles and Stan are talking in his office and Crystal calls, I must separate that into two scenes because there are two separate story lines taking place. Chapter 5 is a good example of this situation. There are 6 scenes within that chapter however, the reader only sees two.
Here's the outline for that chapter. You can get a good visual of what I'm saying.

You shouldn't see the break in scenes 5.1-5.5, while your reading the story. But I need to have that break in my draft to keep track of the story lines.
Once in a while you will run across the asterisks in the story and they don't belong there, from your point of view. It just means I forgot to take them out.

I'm still going back and editing earlier chapters. In chapters 1-7, I've made some changes, but they do not affect the story. The changes consist of formatting the documents (tabs, indents, spacing ) and the never ending grammar mistakes. There are over 231,000 characters in the first 19 chapters, alone. A character can be defined as a letter, punctuation mark, or space. Yes, space. The spaces in between sentences, paragraphs, headings, and anywhere else you can think of, all come into play while formatting MS Word or any other application you choose.
MS Word is not the best word processor to write a book. There are much better processors out there. The only reason I put up with word is its compatibility. Almost everyone has Word. However, writing a novel is different than non-fiction, for a zillion reason's. Therefore, I'll have to graduate to a professional word processor if I want to continue novel writing. There's a couple I'm looking at and one I've already bought.
Indelibleink.com is a cool writing tool because it's an add-In for MS Word. Dramatica.com is a great piece of software. I know because I used it to assist in writing Nano. I own Dramatica 4.0. But, it's an aid to writing a novel, not a word processor.
Quark appears to be the best, as far as industry standards are concerned. It's very expensive. But, seems to be worth every penny.
Some of the other things I've edited out consists of swear words. Wow. There were a lot. It comes with writing when you are in character. I try my best to write what I think the character is feeling. Inevitably, many of them swear. Swear words are great adjectives. However, when I go back and re-read chapters, for the umpteenth time, I can see how it takes away from the story. So, I deleted many of them and replaced some with other adjectives, like, screw, instead of f***. Three characters appear to have a habit of swearing a lot. C, the henchman, and Matt's alter-ego. Furthermore, Matt seems to swear back-at the alter-ego. Hunter cusses a lot also, especially when he's enraged. Since Hunter spends a good deal of act I, and act II, enraged, there are cuss words all over the place. I've deleted many of them and hopefully the rage and anger Hunter is feeling is still present and intense.

I officially hate MS Word. The formatting, of the documents, are taking as long as the writing! Quark, here I come. I've gone back, yet again and changed formatting within the chapters and the master copy. What is truly mind-boggling about MS Word is the pagination function. I'm not going to go into it now, but the re-pagination should be fixed, period. Pagination is a hand tool, but re-pagination is driving me insane. Those who use MS Word will understand. Let's put it this way, every time you make subtle changes, Word decides, based on its Bayesian technology, that it knows what you want to do. It doesn't. Suggestion to Bill Gates: fire all your Bayesian software writers, they suck.
What's true in Nano, what's not? [II]
What is fiction and what isn't, in Nano? In chapter 1, Rob is introduced as Hunter's therapist. The back-story is covered in chapter 2, and Hunter goes to Rob's house for a therapy session, in chapter 3. By the end of chapter 3, Rob, has been thoroughly introduced and his role defined. He is Hunter's Obi-Wan.
Rob is a real person. He does live in Evanston, and the description of the car-ride up to Rob's house is real. I know, because he was my therapist for many years. This isn't the first time I've written about him. He's covered extensively in From the Pits to the Pits. Furthermore, in my 2nd book, 8-Steps to Therapy, one of the main characters is partially based on Rob. If this world had more Robs we'd be a heck-of-allot better off.

In chapter three I begin to introduce Hunter's gift. The gift came to Hunter through his hard work surrounding giving up drugs and alcohol. Hunter's brain seemed to rewire and he began to understand that he was a genius. Through reading (actually speed-reading) Hunter began to learn. His brain took him to places of complete understanding of mathematics and theoretical physics. This is how he came to build that special computer. Moreover, it's how he comes to build several other things that haven't been introduced in the early chapters of Nano. In coming chapters, Hunter is going to introduce a new scientific area to the reader. The technology that Hunter introduces has been around for quite some time, its that we are only now making advances in it. So, hold on to your hats, it's gonna be a lot of fun as the book progresses.
The gift Hunter receives is very similar to a gift I received. I had to wait a bit longer than Hunter though. Hunter received it about 5 years after he gave up drugs and alcohol. I had to wait 10 years. Yes, I'm an alcoholic and drug addict. I'm 14 years sober. About 4 years ago something happened to my brain. It rewired itself. I know-not-how? It just happened. My guess is that it was a result of being sober for so long.
I didn't acquire all the genius type skills Hunter has. That's fiction. I don't have a quantum computer. And, if I did, I wouldn't tell you! :-) However, I did realize I had a gift for understanding theoretical physics and fractals. Plus I came to understand that I can absorb massive amounts of information. In 2001 I began to read. Everything. Lots and lots of books, articles, white papers, etc. The subjects cover a large spectrum, as can be seen on my research page, generational theory page, trading page, and the rest.
I also practice speed-reading with the same software Hunter uses, Rocket Reader. It's really great software and I've more than doubled my wpm and comprehension. I highly endorse the software.

What's true in Nano, what's not? [III]

Nano is a historical fiction novel. This type of novel mixes true events with fiction. Nano is based on writing what I know. That's the basic law of writing, 'Write what you know'. So, what's true in Nano? What's fiction? And, what part of the novel is based on 'writing what I know'?
I mentioned these topics in a previous section above. I will revisit these topics as more chapters are released and I'll try not to duplicate my writing. However, that's inevitable, so, bear with me.
I know I wrote that, Dan and Brian, are based on two actual friends of mine; the FLW home is real (there's more FLW in chapter 15). What else is truth and what's fiction? What's "writing what I know"?
Let's look at Chapter 1:
"Money meant everything to Hunter, back then."
True. That statement would be based on me. I go on to write that things were different now that Hunter did some maturing. That would be me also. I think!?
Hunter and Diana had a baby in 1992 (Brandon).
Fiction. I made it up. My children were born later. 1992 just fit into the timeline of the story.
"In Oak Park Illinois, circa 1992, things were different. Much different than when Hunter was growing up. So much had changed regarding parenting. It’s as if this new generation of kids were completely different in every way, than when Hunter was young. Parents took their children everywhere these days. Soccer, baseball, piano, dancing lessons, this team that team."
True. This is all based on generational theory. I love generational theory. It solves a lot of problems. If you get a chance, read Strauss and Howe. They wrote several great books. I talk at length about them on my generational page.
Let's look at Chapter 2:
"Diana and Hunter made that magic happen while sitting across from each other, that first night they’d met."
True. The storyline about how Hunter and Diana met is based on the first night I met my wife, in 1982, who's name is, Diana. Every word of it happened.
The word Thinker and Analytics start showing up in this chapter. It's an underlying theme throughout the book. Hunter must get to a place where he can think without his emotions getting in the way. The storyline is also brought into Diana and Hunter's relationship.
True. As far as Hunter is concerned. What Hunter is trying to achieve is basic Jungian therapy. Jung advanced the work of Freud's observing ego work. The therapists I saw, when I was healing, were Jungian therapist's.
Fiction. Diana and Hunter. I thought it would be good to use this in their relationship also. No big reason, I just did it.
Maurice, the Lawyer.
Fiction. Except for the name. He's named after my nephew.
This character is what I consider raw fiction. I made him up as I was typing the first chapter. I often do this. I'll write more about that aspect later.
Let's look at Chapter 3:
I wrote about Rob above. He's real. He lives in Evanston. But did I mention the drive up to Evanston?
True. It's the worst.
"One day Hunter was reading a book by Peirs Anthony called, Fractal Mode."
True. I love the book. I thought it was a good way to introduce Benoit Mandelbrot. Mandelbrot blows me away. For the life of me, I don't understand why I DO understand what he's writing about? I flunked algebra four times.
"While reading Mandelbrot, Fibonacci, Kindleberger, David Deutsch, Cesare Marchetti and countless others..."
True. Love them all. Their collective writing has assisted me in economic cycle researchand the writing of this book. David Deutsch is the modern day Einstein.
More on these subject's later. I've got to get back to writing the book!

What's true in Nano, what's not? [IV]

Let's look at :
Chapter 4
Designing Hunter's chair, in his lab, was fun. The modifications made to the dentist type chair are all true. They can be found.
For instance, the B&W speakers can be found here. If you've ever had the pleasure of listening to B&W speakers you know the quality. There aren't many better speakers made. I had a pair of 801s and they were simply outstanding.
The keyboards are real and can be found here and here. The design is patented. I made two modifications. First, I split the keyboard in two. Like the way they do with regular keyboards. Second, I made the emitter smaller and shaped it like a small ball point pen.
The computer displays are real and then I altered them. I actually was looking for some type of flex display to use in Hunter's lab and in his virtual Disneyworld. The real part comes from Professor J. Stephen Smiths PhD , University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology. While I was doing research for the displays I ran across an article by Sixto Ortiz. Great article. Sixto is a good tech writer. That's not easy to do! The article introduced me to Fluidic self-assembly, which is Dr. Smith's work. The idea of a flexible display wasn't new to me. I'd seen some of the advances made and was interested in giving Hunter something in the flexible display area. Professor Smith's work provided the foundation and took it once step further with his idea of Fluidic self-assembly.
The fictional part comes in the way the displays work, in Hunter's lab and in his virtual world. I have them unfold out of thin air, in his lab. In the virtual world I have the display float up out of a drawer and follow Hunter. All fiction.
What about Schrödinger’s cat? Absolutely true. Erwin Schrödinger is a real man. His paradox called Schrödinger’s cat blew my mind. That thought experiment led me to theoretical physics. The quotes from Julian Brown's book are true. That book helped me set the foundation, in the book, for theoretical physics and quantum computing. And, if my memory serves me, the book introduced me to the work of David Deutsch . If you read the thank you section you'll see a Special thanks section. Mr. Deutsch's name is at the top of the list.
His work is so far ahead of its time. He must know how Einstein felt when he released his work to the masses. I can't be easy. Everyone thinks your crazy. Mr. Deutsch is well known for many advancements in science. What interested me, about his work, was his advancement of Hugh Everett's work on multiple universes.
First, allow me to credit those who deserve it. I had to write Mr. Deutsch to ask permission to use his work. Specifically, the quotes you read in chapter 4. I was lucky enough to have him answer me. You see, Mr. Deutsch is one of the smartest men on the planet. (If you want to learn more about his work, the following is from his web site, "Since 1999 I have been a non-stipendiary Visiting Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford, where I am a member of the Centre for Quantum Computation at the Clarendon Laboratory." You can also go to his home page by clicking his name, David Deutsch.) When he wrote me back, allowing me to reprint his work, he pointed out a 'mis-statement' of fact I'd made in the book. I'll go back and fix that. However, here's what I wrote and his reply.
From Nano:
> Hunter’s achievements in computing were only
possible because of Deutsch’s multiverse theory. Deutsch’s conclusion is that
there are an endless amount of universes, with endless copies of everyone. In
these Multiverses everyone is carrying out every single possibility on
every single decision that can be made. Say, that once you make a decision in
this world/universe, it sets off a chain reaction down the Multiverse path and
every other decision that could have been made is carried out in the other
Multiverses.
Mr. Deutsch's response:
"This does not contain any excerpt of The Fabric of Reality. However, it
does contain a mis-statement of fact. I am not the originator of the Multiverse
theory. That was Hugh Everett in 1957 (and Erwin Schrödinger had independently
reached the basic idea in the early1950s). I merely developed the theory and
also applied it to some interesting cases."
So, now, I've corrected my mistake and credit is going to those who deserve it. I'm a very big believer in this, as you can tell from my Thank You section.

Getting back to how it must feel to introduce or advance a new theory, I'd just like to say that I don't envy people like Mr. Deutsch when they have to do that. Inevitably they are heralded as geniuses, after they are dead. Frankly, that sucks. Give the guy credit now. His advancements in multiverse theory are astounding. They answer so many questions. Not to mention his other work, which is numerous.
Moving on, what about Shor's Algorithm? True.

Wow, are you getting Nano raw! As you might have read earlier, Nano isn't done. The storyboard and outline are complete, so it's just a matter of putting it on paper. That's not difficult, at all, for me. The outline and storyboarding are truly the hard part. But, the chapters have caught up to me. Meaning, I was about 3 chapters ahead of posting dates. I had, I think, about 19 chapters done when I began posting the book. So, I spent a lot of time going back and editing, and reediting the book. The time between how many chapters I had on paper and the posting dates, I'd listed on the web site, got closer and closer together until...today! Now, I'm outta chapters. You're getting Nano write out of the box, and no, I didn't misspell right. I'm writing the chapter and you're are getting it the same day. That's what I call, Nano Raw.
Forgive the errors, be it, grammatical or spelling. The words, paragraphs, pages, chapters, are coming fast and furious. There's bound to be errors. I'll go back and fix them as soon as chapter 27 is done and in your hands.

I look at writing as a two step procedure. Structure and the actual writing. Allow me to explain. The structure of my writing comes from reading. In Nano, Hunter, is a vivacious reader. So much so, that I italicize the word reading, to emphasize the point, almost every time you see it in Nano. He's a speed reader also. Since Hunter is based loosely on me, you can gather that I too am a vivacious reader and I practice speed-reading. I read a lot. I do not know why? It wasn't always this way. It started about four or five years ago. Suddenly I began reading. It's as if my brain had finally re-wired itself after 10 years of sobriety. That's my only guess. It logical also. To me, the structure of writing has several different levels. The most important being the subjects I'm going to use in my story.
The subjects in Nano came from reading about Nano technology, quantum physics, theoretical physics, campaign finance, and drunk driving. I read many other subjects and some of them are represented in Nano, like American history. But, I had to decide what subjects went into Nano and I had to keep track of how often I used a particular subject. Once that was done, I was ready to put it on paper. That's the level of writing I call, the actual writing. Meaning, I've done my homework, now I get to write. This is my favorite part of writing because the ideas seemingly come from nowhere.
So, I've done the structuring of my book. I've got a basic idea of the main characters; good guy, bad guy, love interest. But the characters that take the role of back seat drivers, such as an R2D2, C3PO, supporting cast, if you will, aren't anywhere to be found, in my pre-planning. I make them up as needed. In fact, I make a lot of stuff up as I'm typing.
I'm making this up as I type it. I had no idea what I was going to write, in this posting, except the title. This stuff just pours out of my head and onto the screen. I don't know where it comes from? It's truly a gift that I'm grateful for. (Now if I could just get that grammatical and spelling gift!)
In the writing of Nano, you'd be shocked at how I do it. Most writers need complete silence, or they can't be disturbed when they write, etc. Or, they have to write for a few hours at a time without so much as an interruption. Not me.
I've written a good portion of this book in 10 minute fits-and-starts. I'll have 10 or 15 minutes free time, so I write. Then, boom, interruption. I have to go do something with one of my kids. Then, I find a few minutes to write again. Start, stop, etc. It doesn't bother me in the least because this stuff just comes pouring out. I'm never at a loss for an idea. I'm very lucky in this regard.
Some of the chapter in Nano are what I consider B-side chapters. When I was young we'd buy records. Many songs were released as singles, on a record called a 38 (it stands for, 38 rpm. Or, 38 revolutions per minute.). The front side was called side 'A'. That had the hit song on it. The other side was the 'B' side, which had a not-so-hit-song on it. Pretty much, it sucked. However, as time went on, many bands made the effort to make the B-side songs better. But the main reason the record was released was the 'A-side' song. Nano, has 'B-side' chapters in it.
Those chapters are bridges to storylines, or, bridges to get me to another point in the story. Or, they are there to move the story along. I never plan these chapter, I just write them as I type; making up names, places, characters, incidents, and brand new storylines as I go along. This is my favorite part of writing. I guess it could be called, improv writing. (No. Critics may not use that to bash my writing!)
I guess I can say that I'm very lucky when it comes to ideas about writing. They just pop up. A couple of examples in Nano would be as follows:
Hunter's virtual world
Hunter's house
The back-story of the Ackart family
The setting for the final Act
I'll pick one of those and try and explain it. Let's look at Hunter's house. As I was writing the first chapter, I had Hunter heading back towards Oak Park on the Eisenhower expressway. I knew he'd live in Oak Park, and I thought I'd have him live in the house I grew up in, but that seemed boring. As I was writing the chapter and Hunter was pulling up to his house, I suddenly decided to make it the Frank Lloyd Wright house I'd grown up loving. When I hit on an idea, such as this, I'll stop writing and start doing research on that particular subject. Regarding the FLW home, I did my research on the Internet (where I do most of my research) and was able to find some excellent sites. Then, I watched a three-hour PBS video on FLW. By then, I had enough ideas about the house and the man to put something on paper. When I came back to writing Nano, after the research, it was just a matter of weaving it into the story.

What's true in Nano, what's not? [V]
Chapter 5:
It was a pleasure to write this chapter. I love American history and generational theory. Chapter 5 was full of history and it had a bit of generational theory thrown in as well.
So, what was true? What wasn’t?
True: The Lincoln election and all the information that went with it, including the money raised by the candidates.
False: Of course, as with the whole book, the characters of the Ackart family have nothing to do with this moment in history.
True: Facts about Illinois. including, The Contract between the Americans and Tardiveau, in 1787. Illinois became a state in 1818. Illinois was called the Northwest Territory before it became a state.
Finance: The crash of 1837 happened. The specie circular of July 11th 1836 is a fact and the government did precipitate the crash by committing this act.
All the facts about the economy are true. The banking system, land sales, etc. The steam ship building and canals are true, as is the building of the National Pike road. The roads path is true also. It did end in Vandalia, IL and it was completed in 1838.
Later in the chapter, Charles begins to tell the story of how his family lost all their money. Estes was the culprit. Everything Estes encountered happened in American history. The crash of 1857 did happen and it did catch the country completely off guard. Everything Charles describes about the crash happened. Kansas and Nebraska did almost become non-existent because of their money problems. Also, selling the family land in 1855 would have been a very good thing to do, as Estes did. It was the top of the market until the end of the century. The facts about the war in Europe, the 1848 war with Mexico, the gold rush, the immigration, and the like are true.
What about Gustav Swift, Nelson Morris, and Jay Cooke?
All true.

Generational theory used in chapter 5:
The Ackart family back-story was built on generational theory.
A quote from Nano, “The state was born in 1818 as was Estes. He was born to a successful writer, John Vallis Ackart, whose peers included, Emerson, Thoreau, Longfellow, and Poe. John’s father, Vallis James, was an original settler in Illinois and a member of the treaty signed in 1787, The Contract between the Americans and Tardiveau, which assigned Tardiveau to secure land for them inside Illinois, which was then called the Northwest Territory. Tardiveau, did just that. All this, just after the American Revolution. John Vallis was a hard working farmer.”
John would have been a member of the Transcendental generation. the famous writers mentioned above were all members of the Transcendental. I also made Estes a member of the Transcendental. John’s father was a member of the Compromise generation.

The crime committed in chapter 5:
The crime didn’t happen and isn’t based on anything but my imagination. However, the location it takes place in is real. That would be, the streets of Oak Park and a building in Oak Park; they are real.
I interviewed a Chicago Police Officer to learn how the police officer in the story would have handled the shooting. The officer was working in the lobby of the Chicago Board of Trade, when the terrorist alerts were so high, in 2003. I’d ask him questions day after day. He was very helpful!
Chapter 6:
Crystal says, “We think if the White House keeps falling all over itself by sending our troops every which way, then mid summer should work great…”
That was taken right out of the headlines, at the time I was writing the story. As a matter of fact, everything about Saddam and Iraq was taken from the news that was happening at the time. Furthermore, Saddam was a product of the CIA.

The information about the schools in Oak Park is true. However, the two schools I write about have been re-built and renamed. I did attend both, as did Danny B., and Brian.
The way we attended them is also true. I did move after kindergarten and Danny did move 4 years later. I’ve written about Dan and Brian at length in other articles on this site, so I won’t go into much detail here.
Hunter’s Lab:
The DeCoro couch and chair are real as are many things in Hunter’s lab. Then there are the jokes.
Danny tells a joke, “There’s about 500 employees. But check this out. 29 have been accused of spousal abuse, 7 have been arrested for fraud, 19 have been accused of writing bad checks, 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least two businesses, 3 have done time for assault, 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit, 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges, 8 have been arrested for shoplifting, 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits and 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year.”
These statements are absolute fact. They are all facts about our elected leaders; our Congress.

Campaign Financing:
As you know this was at the heart of the book. This was one of the themes of the story. Most of what is written is a product of my research into campaign finance. There isn’t much that isn’t true. Sad.
The fact about the Social Security money is true. The jerks did that every year and to this day they still do it.
The apathy of the country is opinion-truth. It’s also generational theory. Apathy is supposed to be happening at this point in time according to generational theory. So to me it’s no big surprise. However, it doesn’t mean that I like it.

Chapter 6 goes more in depth into the issue of campaign financing (CF). The research I did, that went into the issue, was eye-opening and pretty much made me sick. It was a difficult process. Reading about the abuses of CF that have plagued this country since its inception is mind-boggling. Simply because the citizens seem to accept the fact that politicians live by a completely different set of laws than the people they represent. The apathy of this countries citizens over the last 230 years defies all logic.
As I wrote in the introduction, one of the main themes of Nano is CF. Instead of getting mad and doing nothing, I decided to take the Tiger Woods approach and focus my anger. Chapter 6 has a great deal of that focus. In fact, Nano is a compellation of much of that anger. I merely asked myself a question, when I approached writing the book, "Can something so small make a difference?" The 'smallness' is referring to Hunter, not the Nano technology.
Everything you'll read about CF within Nano is true. All the research is fact. I've simply changed the names.
Lastly, Mary, Donna, and Helen are real. I grew up with them.

Excerpts from Nano
Hunter McCallen had a very bad thing happen to him. He felt helpless, powerless, and inconsequential. The political powers pushed aside what they thought was just another helpless, powerless, and inconsequential human being. Hunter was anything but.
Hunter liked to read. Hunter liked to build things. Special things. Things that had never been built by another human being. And, the politicians at the state, federal, and even the White House, would pay dearly.

Charles Ackart was the youngest Governor ever elected to the state of Illinois. He has political family lines stretching back into a rich American history of a very powerful family. Charles’s great-great-great grandfather, Estes Ackart, was the first Ackart to weave his way into the political system. He was a local politician from Illinois who helped President Lincoln defeat Breckinridge, Bell, and Douglas in the U.S. presidential election of 1860.
Estes family had roots in a young nation and most importantly they had a lot of land. With that land came the right to vote, political power, and money. By the time Estes was born, the family had been on the land for over 35 years and the land had grown in size from 100 acres to 4,000 acres. Those acres produced farming which produced money.

The special computer was encased in an airtight germ free room in the corner. The room was about 6x9 and secured with a digital lock that couldn’t be broken by the best minds in the world. It wasn’t 128 bit encrypted, nor was it 256 bit. Those numbers were useless to Hunter. That’s because he could crack 128 bit encryption in seconds. Even though it would take a billion computers more than 10 trillion years to try all the keys before finding the answer. Hunter’s lock was different.
Behind that lock, inside the airtight room, sat a computer like no other computer in the world. The only one in existence and probably the only one that would be in existence for quite some time, unless, Hunter gave away his knowledge. His knowledge from reading.

The famous Schrödinger’s cat paradox came from a 1935 paper and is a thought experiment devised by a buddy of Einstein’s whose name was, appropriately, Schrödinger. Schrödinger’s cat is an illustration, of the principle in quantum theory, of superposition. The short simplistic version of the experiment is this: Put a cat in a box. Place a Geiger counter in the box. The Geiger counter is wired to a diabolical device, as Schrödinger called it. The device has a small amount of radioactive material in it. The radioactive material has a 50-50 chance of decaying in one minute. If the material decays the Geiger counter detects it and sends an electrical charge to the diabolical device which releases a hammer that smashes a bottle of liquid, that is full of poison and the cat buys-the-farm.
Schrödinger asks, what state is the cat in after one minute, in the box? You can’t see into the box, and you have no way of knowing unless you look. The laws of probability state that the decay of the radio active material is a purely random process. It’s a 50-50 chance. Radioactivity is ultimately a quantum process. So what is the answer?
According to quantum mechanics, the radioactive atoms are both intact and decayed simultaneously. This is called superposition in quantum language. Said differently, the cat is both alive and dead, at the same time. Only when someone observes (opens the box) does the cat become dead or alive. So, if you see that cat alive, guess what?.... the cat died in another universe. If you see the cat dead, then...you guessed it...it's alive in another universe.

“Ok then, where were we. Ah, yes, the agenda for your run. We should formally announce in mid summer. I know that it’s further out than you wanted, but you’ll have to trust us on this one. We think if the White House keeps falling all over itself by sending our troops every which way, then mid summer should work great,” Crystal advised.
“How do you figure that?” Charles asked.
“Our polls show that the majority of the public is leery about entering Iraq. They don’t think the White House has made the case. We think this will turn into one big mess because the White House is going to say and do anything to get their hands on Iraq’s resources.” Crystal said.
“You don’t think they can get their hands on Hussein?”
“No way. He’s a product of the CIA and the US has a better chance of winning the war quickly by negotiating under-the- table with Hussein. The US wants to waltz in and not face much opposition. If Saddam doesn’t oppose U.S. forces then our army can look like heroes by taking Baghdad quickly. Hence, the White House looks good. They’ll tell Hussein that he can keep a couple of billion in his Swiss account and then they’ll fuck Hussein in the end.”
“So you think they’re dealing with him quietly?”
“Absolutely. He’s the best thing that happened to this administration’s campaign donors. They can’t count their money fast enough.”

A non descript car sat outside 433 Forest Ave. The occupant gazed at the house. Kind of admiring it’s different style. Then he thought that it was just a fancy fuckin’ house with fancy fuckin’ people in it, like every one of the houses in this fancy fuckin’ neighborhood. Fuck em’.
He looked around at the fancy fuckin’ neighborhood and thought that it wouldn’t be a good idea to stay here to long. He might be spotted in his non descript car. These days people seemed to call the police for anything. Christ! They’d call for walkin’ on their lawn! Imagine that, he thought. Well, I’d have a word or two for them, “sorry for steppin’ on your fancy fuckin’ lawn. I wonder how your fancy fuckin’ lawn and your fancy fuckin’ house will look with your fancy fuckin’ blood sprayed all over the place!”
What a satisfying scene he’d created in his head. How satisfying would it be to make it reality? Very. That’s why they called him, C. Cuz’ he’d love to C your blood and guts all over the place. Especially if they were those fancy fuckin’ blood n’ guts.

Look, just get online and figure out how this Hunter guy is stealing the money. Then tell sẽnior dick-head, Charles, and get the money for a job well done. NOT! NOT! a job well done but an illeeeegal job well done! Ill-fucking-legal!! Jail jail jail jailjailjaiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllll!! ASSHOLE! Fuck shut up! Man, take a fucking pill you fucking psycho fuck. Breathe Matt. Breathe. Matt took a deep breath. In, out. In, out. That was nice, Mr. Yoga, now go do your illegal work and never be held accountable for anything ‘cause you suck! That thought invaded his head quickly. Matt tried to calm himself again by breathing, too no avail. In his mind, he was still a prick.
Physics. Do physics. That’s it. Think physics Matt. Type the timeline for quantum theory. That’ll help me get focused. Matt turned to his computer and began to type.
Quantum Theory; QT put Newtonian determinism to rest. Newton determined that the universe worked like clockwork, from the beginning to the end. If a tree fell in the forest and there wasn’t anyone around then it didn’t make a difference, the tree made a sound. QT said that the tree didn’t make a sound unless someone observed it. Newton said everything objectively exists even if we don’t observe it. QT says no-way-José. QT says nothing exists unless we observe it and when we do observe it, it has profound affects but I’m not going into those effects now because It’ll make me nuts even though I’m already a bit wiggy. Yes you are! Type Matt.

Hunter proved that Shor’s algorithm was correct. Hunter built a computer that could compute at such incomprehensible speeds that building a software program that housed a virtual Disneyworld was extremely simple.
Hunter moved towards the building marked Emporium Books.
Each building, on Main Street, housed a different database, although, they were all linked. The emporium housed Hunters mounting collection of campaign finance data.
The only way Hunter could handle his mounting rage he was experiencing from reading about campaign financing, (and drunk driving statistics) was to soften the emotional blows by placing the data in a place Hunter held near and dear to his heart. A child like place, like Main Street U.S.A., Disneyland.
Hunter entered the store and veered to his left towards a display of characters. A drawer beneath the display opened and a Fluidic Self-Assembly (FSA) flexible display floated up and out of the drawer, to eye level.
Hunter walked out of the emporium onto Main Street. Above him, the sun was out and the sky was blue. Around him was a main street he had all to himself. The FSA followed Hunter as if tethered. He sat on the bench just outside the store. The display moved in front of him. It was the size of a widescreen computer monitor. However, it was only centimeters thick. Hunter flicked his eye to the screen and stared at a small icon in the lower left hand corner. The file opened and hunter began to read.

Congress was making it appear that they were actually doing something by passing bills that were supposed to change the way politicians handled the whole issue of campaign financing. Again and again, year after year, Congress spewed forth rhetoric about reforming the campaign finance laws. One Senator, during floor debate, explained that the following took place in Congress, on behalf of reform, all for nothing:
o 6,742 pages of hearings
o 3,361 floor speeches
o 2,748 pages of reports from the Congressional Research Service
o 1,063 pages of committee reports
o 113 votes in the Senate
o 522 witnesses; 49 days of testimony
o 29 sets of hearings from 8 different congressional committees
o 17 filibusters
o 8 cloture votes on one bill;
o 1 Senator arrested and dragged to the floor
o 15 reports issued by 6 different congressional committees
...all for nothing.

Anyone who believes that campaign contributions don't influence politicians and public policy hasn't been paying attention. Big money politics is the greatest threat facing American democracy.
Special-interest money from the alcohol industry flows into the campaign finance accounts of legislators. Those legislators make decisions that reward those industries. Often the decisions are detrimental to the health and financial well-being of American families.
These contributions/donations helped prevent legislation establishing a tough nationwide drunk driving standard.
Alcohol interests gave $22.7 million from 1989 to 1999.
1997-1999, the industry spent $21.9 million on federal lobbying.
In 1998, the alcohol industry and the restaurant interests successfully fought-off an attempt to strengthen drunk-driving standards at the national level.

Nano, has been a work in progress. I came up with the idea one day, while standing in the trading pit, on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. It was in early 2002, when I started writing ideas down on scrap paper. It manifested into this book.
The story of Nano is based on four topics that have always peaked my interest. None of them have ever affected me personally. The reason I state this will become obvious as you read further. Those topics are Nano Technology, Quantum Physics, Campaign Finance, and Drunk Driving.
The topic that will cause emotions to rise is drunk driving with campaign finance a close second, but it just isn’t as emotional as drunk driving. As I said, I’ve never been personally affected by drunk driving. I’ve never received a DUI nor do I know anyone who has been killed or killed any person while driving drunk. My interest lies in societies apathy for drink driving. Nano speaks to the issue.
From conception I knew I wanted to bring in quantum physics and some of the numerous writings I’d collected about our politicians in Washington, concerning campaign finance.
Quantum physics has always fascinated me. More specifically, quantum theory, which is just one field within the quantum science universe. There’s a lot of quantum theory in this book, however, the goal was to keep it in Star Trek form. Meaning, I didn’t want complicated formula’s just interesting facts and if it didn’t exist in this world, keep it simple. Nano Technology is simply mind boggling. My journey began with a book titled, Engines of Creation; The Coming Era of Nanotechnology, by K. Eric Drexler. Mr. Drexler is highly regarded in his field and has one of the most brilliant minds on the planet. Nano technology should be taken very seriously. You can forget about germ warfare and viruses being released on the masses. Those two items hold nothing over Nano technology.
Nano technology is not as complicated as it appears. It’s just about getting really really small. Molecular small, atomic small, muon small.
Building machines at the molecular level is no longer fantasy as it was in 1986 when Mr. Drexler wrote his book. It’s reality now, in 2005. Believe me when I tell you that it’s positively the greatest danger to mankind. Unless governments around the globe adopt many of the ideas that Mr. Drexler offered, starting 19 years ago with his book and has continued to offer since then, we are all in deep trouble.
Campaign financing is at the root of all that ails this country. If my book opens your eyes to that fact, then I’ve done my job. Nano speaks to the problem.
Fiction is much harder to write than non-fiction. My first three books were non-fiction. (Although my 2nd book is a fictional story it’s based on my real life experiences). The formula for non-fiction is simple; write the story on a timeline. Furthermore, it’s easy to write non-fiction because everything in the story happened. There’s not too much creative process in it.
Fiction is very different. I found myself asking a thousand questions as Nano developed. How do I keep track of the characters? What characters interact with each other and how do they interact? How do I keep track of their interactions? What’s the main plot, sub-plots, and back-story? What research do I need to do and how do I keep track of that? What’s the best way to develop the story and how do I actually go about developing the story? When do I introduce a pivot point? I was overwhelmed.
Whenever I get overwhelmed, I do what any person might do in the 21st century, open Excel and start building spreadsheets. It worked very well.
Lastly, I’d like to pass along some advice for all the writers out there who get frustrated trying to complete a project similar to this one. Screw the critics. Write whatever you are passionate about and it will flow. Most books in their final product are about structure. That structure is a simple formula. If you learn the basic formula for the genre you are writing, you’ll do just fine. That can be taught and you can learn it. I sincerely hope you enjoy Nano.
